ROUGH DRAFT (MELVILLE)

George Orwell wrote the book "Animal Farm" in 1945 to criticize the dictators and blind followers in Russia.At the time the leader in Russia was Stalin and he was a dictator but gained so much power because many people blindly followed him. Eventhough “Animal Farm” was written around 60 years ago, it still has meaning for today’s reality. In "Animal Farm" the way charecters respond to stories has a strong connection to thier ability to surive.

 

First,Squealer masters the stories by twisting them to his advantage.One story that Squealer twist is the story of the beds.What actually happens is that they changed the ammendment to "NO ANIMAL MAY SLEEP IN A BED WITH SHEETS".Squealer twisted it and told the fellow animals that anything could be considered a bed it the sheets that are made by humans therefore they are the things that should be banned.Another story Squealer twist is the story of Boxer's death.Boxer was actually sent to a horse slaughterer and glue boiler.Squealer is able to twist this story and tell the animals "that the van was actually previously owned by a horse slaughterer the vet forgot to paint over it".One more story Squealer twist is the story of the windmill.He explains that "Snowball knocks it down" and all of the animals actually believe him.What really happened is that the previous night there was a horrible storm that actually blew it down.All through all Squealer is able to master the stories around him therefore he survives and thrives at the end.

 

Second, Benjamin is able to master the stories around him by not believing them.One story that was told all around the farm is the story of the windmill."Windmill or no windmill life will go on as it always has."The story was that with the windmill work would be easier or the animals.Another story that Benjamin doesn't believe is the story of Boxer's death.Benjamin is able to interpret what the sign on the truck says and tries to warn the other animals but they are so persuaded that Napoleon would never do something that horrid so they end up not believing him.Squealer tell the fellow farm animals that Boxer died happy in the hospital but Benjamin knows what he saw and still doesnt believe it.One more story Benjamin doesnt believe is the campaigns of the two Snowball and Napoleon.He believes that food will not become plenty if we pick Napoleon and labor will not be at ease if they choose Snowball.Because Benjamin doesnt believe the stories around him,he ends up surviving at the end.

 

Third,Boxer is not able to master a story but gets mastered by the story.Boxer believes anything that comes from Napoleon."Napoleon is always right" is one of the two phrases he lives by.Boxer believes the story of the windmill so he strains himself to work harder than before.

 

The ability to understand stories has a major impact on the ability to survive in “Animal Farm”.Since Squealer has the ability to twist a story he survives and thrives. Because Benjamin doesn’t believe any of the story told by anyone, he has an ability to survive at the end of the story.Since Boxer cant understand stories and doesn’t have the ability to understand that they are full of lies, that has a major impact on his survival skills. 

Why Do The Animals Except Napoleon's lies?

The animals except Napoleons lies because most of the animals are either to afraid,atupid or they respect Boxer which supports Napoleon.First,many of the animals are not smart enough to understand that Napoleon is lying to them."Boxer could not get passed the letter D.He would trace out A,B,C,D." "Clover asked Benjamin to read her the sixth commandment ,and when Benjamin,as usual, said that he refused to meddle in such matters .She fetched Muriel.Muriel read the commandment for her.It read "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause."Second,most of the animals are scared of Napoleon."All that year the animals worked like slaves." Many of the animals are too afraid to speak up for themselves.Third,Boxer,a respected animal supports Napoleon.Boxer was "universally respected". "Napoleon is always right" is one of Boxer's two slogans that he lives by.So since Boxer supports Napoleon most of the animals respect and look up to Boxer so they support whatever he supports too, which is Napoleon.The animals don't know what Napoleon is doing wrong because he has squealer to persuasively lie to the animals and the animals believe him.

Al Capone
Al Capone is America’s best known gangster and the greatest symbol of the rebellion against law in the Prohibition Era. Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities that sent Chicago its nickname the “Lawless City.” He was born January 17,1899 in the rough streets of Brooklyn, New York. In his early days he was part of two “kid gangs” one called The Brooklyn Rippers and the other called Forty Thieves Juniors. Even though Al was one of the brightest in his class he dropped out of school in the sixth grade at the age of fourteen. Between gangs he was at his hustle to earn as much money as he possibly could by being a clerk in a candy store, a pin boy at a bowling alley, and a cutter in a book bindery. Growing up with eight other siblings , life was tough for his parents to afford . His father Gabriel, just a barber at a nearby barbershop and mother, just a seamstress they couldn’t afford all that life could give. At this time, Capone was influenced by fellow mobster Johnny Torrio were he promised him the world. Capone fell into his little promise and led a bad life. He took part of the Notorious Five Points gang in Manhattan were he worked as a bouncer for peer gangster Frankie Yale. One day an argument aroused and that is were he received the famous scars on the left side of his face and became the infamous “Scarface.” In 1918, at the age of 19 he met a girl named Mary “ Mea “ Coughlin at a dance. They started dating and that same year she gave birth to their first born Albert “Sonny” Capone on December 4. That same year they got married on the 30th of December.
Al Capone lived in an Era where everything was at tumult, many gangs where basically owning the cities and the government couldn’t do anything about it.Eventhough, there were many other mobsters other than Capone, they didn’t achieve what Al did. When the cops did get involved in the gangs they caught most of them for the simple fact they weren’t as smart as Al. Cops couldn’t find any “dirt” on Al so they convicted him on his taxes. The historical problem that was risen during that era was mainly just gang violence. The way Al Capone contributed to this dispute or problem was by joining various gangs and increasing the rate of violence in Chicago. This encouraged many other “small” gangs to rebel against their cities and gain control just as the other gangs did in Chicago. What caused Al to actually become part of a gang was one that he lived in a rough neighborhood where gangs was what everybody knew and second, Johnny Torrio the man that influenced him to become a gang member just because he knew Al could become so much more. The only reason Al actually took Johnny’s advice was because he was young and just wanted the money that he knew no other laborious job could give. Al achieved key change by almost controlling all of Chicago’s drug income and big businesses .
Many people feared him and a lot of young kids wanted to be him. Everybody knew the amount of control that he had compared to themselves therefore nobody testified against him when the cops actually did get him in court. Al had most of the cops on his side so there weren’t many cops that you could actually call “good” or “straight“. Al motivated so many other gangsters and people in general to rebel to get what they want .Growing up in a rough neighborhood, Al barely had anything so he mainly toward his focuses on the kids that are living in the same type of predicament that he did.
The people that lived his young lifestyle mainly took Al’s mobster and money getting ways as encouragement.
An important date that Capone is known for is The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre which happened February 14, 1929.This is an important date for Capone because this is when seven of Capone’s rivals were massacred in a garage. All of the evidence pointed at Capone and his henchmen, especially Llewellyn Morris Humphreys (Murray The Hump) and Jack “Machine Gun” McGurn. Everybody had the suspicion that McGurn was actually the one that led the whole operation. The talents that Capone used to manipulate people into believing that he really wasn’t the bad guy was his persuasive way of speech, and definitely the amount of power he had and a lot of people are timid of someone that has more power than they do. The long term change that Al Capone had on our history is the many gangs that are still going on in our modern day world .He really opened up the gang life to many people and many movies have contributed to him like “Scarface.” Many people have seen that movie but don’t know it is actually based on a real person.In modern day I have noticed that many teens look up to the movie scarface just for the simple fact that he got whatever he wanted by drug dealing and without an education .A long term change that happened because of Al’s actions where that much of today’s famous cities still have a high violence rate and most of that percentage is from gang violence for instance: Brooklyn, NY , Philadelphia, PA , Baltimore, MA and many other cities across the U.S.
Al Capone relates to the NHD theme "The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies" because he is an individual that has shaped American gangs by his dispicable actions but without those actions our modern American life would have no gratifying point of view of a stereotypical 1920’s American gangster. We should care about this person today because he is one of the few famous gangsters that have effected American history in ways of the amount of violence that has gone on in past days.With his and a few others they have created a era of their own which is called the Prohibition Era. Capone is a celebrity of his own because of his many anonymous crimes and with the help of countless semi-fictional films that have been produced and based on his lifestyle. What Capone left behind is a standard principle of what being a gangster is. Capone contributed to the standard principle of what being a gangster is by showing how a gangster is supposed to act and respect a person of higher class.

Summary:Brian does nothing wrong but is tortured like always but this time the mother did something different because she saw it on the news.She locked him in the bathroom with a bucket filled with ammoia and bleach combonation.At first he doesnt know what is going on but
then his lungs start to feel as if it is on fire.This torture goes on for about 10 days.When this torture gets old and doesnt satisfy his mom anymore then she made a new kind of torture for him this time he has to lay in the bathtub full of "iceberg cold" water and when he gets out he cant use a towel to dry so he just puts his clothes on and sits in the shade in the backyard.

Explanation:This book has a good plot and what makes it better is that it is the true story of the author Dave Pelzer.It is so sad how the mother treats him like he is nothing while her other children are getting treated like kings.It is also sad that the dad is doing nothing for him but watch .

Summary: Brian turned 11 years old and still he is treated like a caged animal. there is this one incident that happens where Brian is given a time limit to finish his chores and if he doesn't complete them in that period of time the mom threats to kill him. While she is explaining the rules she holds a knife in her hand; Brian notices ad smells that she is drunk. She suddenly tips over and stabs him in the stomach region. After she patches it up she still makes him do the chores with a time limit.

Explanation:This book has the greatest mom vs. son battle that i have ever read about.A good mixture of sympathy and anger arises when read,for the son.

Summary: IN 1925 he took over Chicago organization tht involved illegal liquor, gambling, and prostitution from the gangster Jonny 

Torrio 1882 - 1970. in the next couple of years he eleminating his fueding gangs by a series of gang wars culminating in the St. Valentine’s Day massacre of 1929, which won him control of Chicago’s underworld. Convicted of income tax evasion in 1931 and sentenced to 11 years in prison, he was released in 1939 and spent the rest of his life an invalid, crippled by syphilis.

 This article was helpful with my project because it showed me the specific years that the events happened for instance the St. Valentine Day Massacre.I still believe that the article was created or written for young adults-adults because gang affileation is basically a grown or mature topic to talk about.

Explanation:This book is a really good cross between a drama story and a heartache story. plus its a true story.It shows how cruel a person could get to their own kind.It leaves you heartbroke to the fact that you wonder how can someone do that to such a small and young kid .he is at that stage were he need someone to rely on because he can not rely on himslf

In "Most Dangerious Game" charcter Zaroff clearly values liberty more than equality.First,Zaroff is a rich hunter."enormous building" which shows that he has enough money to build a mansion.We could tell he was a hunter when he said "It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr.Sanger Rainsford,the celebrated hunter,to my home."Zaroff is obviously rich because he owns his own island. Second,Zaroff is a human hunter.Zaroff wants to unt something with "reason." Then goes on saying "but no animal can reason" which shows that either he is goin to hunt humans or just stop hunting period.Zaroff has made his own hunting game when it cme to hunting the humans,he would give them three days and if they lasted the three days that they would declared winner but since then no one has won.In conclusion,these are two reasons why I believe Zaroff values Liberty over Equality.
